What order do water treatment systems go in?

Treat in this order: correct pH, remove iron and sulfur, soften, disinfect, then polish drinking water at the tap. Each stage assumes the one before it did its job. A softener installed ahead of an iron filter fouls, and a UV lamp behind cloudy water does not disinfect.

Common questions

What size water softener do I need?

Multiply hardness in grains per gallon by 75 gallons per person per day, by household size, by days between regenerations. Four people at 15 gpg on a seven-day cycle need 31,500 grains, so a 32,000-grain unit. Then check the efficiency rating, because that decides the running cost: EPA WaterSense looks for more than 3,350 grains of hardness exchanged per pound of salt.

What does NSF certification actually cover?

Only the specific claims listed for that model. Under NSF/ANSI 58, TDS reduction is the sole required claim — lead, nitrate and arsenic are all optional extras a given system may not hold. Under NSF/ANSI 42 and 53, claims vary by product in the same way. Ask which standard and which claim, then look the model up in NSF's listing.

Yes, and nobody does it for you. EPA's enforceable limits apply to public water systems, not to private wells. Every threshold above is a number from a test: hardness, iron, manganese, pH, nitrate, coliform. Symptoms overlap too much to substitute — orange staining is iron, black staining is manganese, and the two need different media.
