A claim that is a list, not a contaminant
Almost every NSF claim names one thing. Lead reduction means lead. Fluoride reduction means fluoride.
VOC reduction means a list, and NSF prints it in the listing footnote:

That is one claim doing the work of dozens, which makes it the broadest single certification in NSF’s taxonomy.

Note two things about the list. Trihalomethanes appears as a group and its members appear individually — chloroform, bromodichloromethane, bromoform and chlorodibromomethane are all there. And some entries are themselves groups: haloacetonitriles and haloketones cover families NSF does not enumerate here, so a compound inside one could be covered without being named.

The only health claim that reaches the main
Four of the 146 are point-of-entry, all listed under Aquion.
Across thirteen claims searched for whole-house products, VOC and trihalomethanes were the only health-related ones with any point-of-entry presence — and both sit on these same four models. Every other health claim returned none.

That is why this claim matters disproportionately. EPA names disinfection byproducts among contaminants that turn into gases and may be inhaled while showering, and points to point-of-entry treatment. The VOC bundle contains trihalomethanes. So these four are the only certified way to address that exposure at the main.

The listings confirm the footnote
A check worth doing, because NSF’s footnote and NSF’s listings are separate publications.
The footnote says a VOC claim includes trihalomethanes. If that holds, every VOC-certified model should also appear under the trihalomethanes claim.
It does. All 146 VOC-certified models hold the trihalomethanes claim, and 7 models hold trihalomethanes without holding VOC. The VOC set is a strict subset, which is exactly what a claim defined to contain trihalomethanes should produce.
The printed list runs to 53 entries: 43 named contaminants, three of which are groups — haloacetonitriles, haloketones and trihalomethanes — with 10 more compounds named beneath them.
Breadth is not completeness
The bundle is wide, and it stops well short of the regulated list.
Haloacetic acids are not in it. HAA5 is the other regulated byproduct group, capped at 0.060 mg/L, and has no NSF claim of any kind. The bundle does contain tribromoacetic acid, which is not one of the five.
None of the uncovered organics is in it. Nineteen regulated organic chemicals have no NSF claim of their own — glyphosate, vinyl chloride, dioxin, diquat, endothall and others. Checking each against the printed list found none.

So a VOC claim broadens what a product is certified against. It does not reach the gaps.
The decision framework
1. Read the list, not the acronym
“VOC” sounds like a category of chemistry. In certification it is a specific printed membership, and your contaminant either appears in it or does not.
2. Use it as a shortcut where it fits
If your concern is trihalomethanes, a VOC claim covers them and so does the named trihalomethanes claim. Either works.

If your concern is not on the list, the claim is irrelevant however broad it sounds.
3. Decide the placement, knowing the constraint
Point-of-use has 142 models. The main has four, from one company. If the shower route is what concerns you, that is the entire certified field.
4. Confirm the claim on the model
Claims vary by product and are listed per model. Some entries carry the footnote “conforms to the material requirements only”, which is a listing under a standard with no reduction claim at all.

Choose a VOC-claimed point-of-use filter if
- Your contaminant is on the printed list and you are treating what you drink.
- You want one claim covering many compounds rather than hunting individual ones.
Choose one of the four whole-house models if
- The exposure that concerns you is inhalation in the shower, and you want it certified. Four models is the whole field.
Choose to look elsewhere if
- Your contaminant is not in the list. Breadth does not help if the specific compound is absent, and 19 regulated organics are.
Mistakes that cost the most money
Reading VOC as “all volatile organics”. It is a printed membership, not a chemical category, and regulated compounds sit outside it.
Assuming it covers haloacetic acids. It does not, and nothing does.
Treating tribromoacetic acid as HAA5 coverage. Different compound; not one of the five.
Buying point-of-use for a shower concern. 142 of the 146 models treat one tap.
Assuming any carbon filter reduces VOCs. Without a listed claim there is nothing to verify, and 146 models out of thousands hold it.
Forgetting cartridge replacement. EPA states carbon filters have a specified shelf life and should be replaced on schedule.
Three situations, and what changes
A solvent plume or industrial site nearby. Check the specific compound against the printed list first. Trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene are both in it; vinyl chloride, a common breakdown product, is not covered by any NSF claim.
Agricultural area, pesticides on the report. Several regulated pesticides are in the bundle — alachlor, atrazine, carbofuran, 2,4-D, lindane, methoxychlor, dinoseb, silvex. Glyphosate, diquat, endothall and picloram are not, and have no claim of their own.
You want byproducts treated at the main. The four Aquion models are the certified field. Anything else offered for that job has no listing to check.
The objections worth answering
“Surely a VOC claim covers all VOCs.” NSF defines it as a specific list and prints it. Anything not on the list is not part of the claim, whatever its chemistry.
“Why does the list include trihalomethanes twice?” It names the group and also names four members individually. That is how NSF prints it, and it is not a contradiction.
“Only four whole-house models?” Across thirteen claims searched, four is the whole health-claimed point-of-entry population. It is a small number and it is the finding.
“These figures will move.” They will. NSF dates its listings and asks readers to confirm status at source, which is why the capture date sits beside every figure here.

Anyone who has seen “VOC reduction” on a filter and wants to know what it covers, and anyone with a named organic compound on a water report trying to find a certified product for it.
It names no recommended product.
What to settle first
Is my compound on the printed list?
If yes, one claim covers it and 146 models hold that claim. If no, no amount of breadth in the bundle will help, and the next question is whether any NSF claim covers it at all.
