No whole-house system holds the claim
The point-of-entry category does not appear in the lead claim set. Not few — none.
For contrast, the same database held 58 distinct point-of-entry models with a chlorine reduction claim under NSF/ANSI 42. Whole-house products exist and get certified; none of them is certified for lead.
That matches how lead reaches you. EPA states that where a home has a lead service line, “these pipes are typically the most significant source of lead in the water” — and both the service line and household plumbing sit downstream of where a point-of-entry unit is installed. A whole-house filter treats water before it passes the pipe that contributes the lead.

What NSF/ANSI 58 adds, and what it does not change
Everything above is the NSF/ANSI 53 lead claim. Reverse osmosis systems carry a separate lead claim under NSF/ANSI 58, and that search returns 145 rows resolving to 127 more distinct models from 35 companies.
Every one of those 127 is listed as plumbed-in to a separate tap. So the point-of-entry finding holds across both standards: no whole-house product holds a lead reduction claim under NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58.

Two numbers deserve attention.
Refrigerator filters are 282 of 615 — 181 aftermarket plus 101 integrated, just under half the certified population. For many households the lead-certified filter in the kitchen is already installed.
Four pitchers. Pour-through is the format most households reach for after a lead scare, and four distinct models held the claim on the capture date, from three companies. That is not a reason to avoid pitchers; it is a reason to check the specific model rather than assuming the category.
The decision framework
1. Establish that you have lead to treat
Lead is picked up in your plumbing, so a compliant utility report is not a measurement of your tap. A first-draw test is.

If you have a fridge dispenser, that category holds 282 of the 615 models and you may already be covered — look your existing cartridge up before buying anything.

4. Read the marking you are being shown
Two lead-related markings point in opposite directions. NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 certification concerns the lead content of the product itself, for “lead free” plumbing under several state laws. Lead reduction is a separate claim.
A listing can also carry the footnote “conforms to the material requirements only”, which places a product under a standard with no reduction claim at all.

Mistakes that cost the most money
Buying whole-house for lead. No point-of-entry product holds the claim in NSF’s listing, and the lead is picked up downstream of where such a unit sits.
Assuming any pitcher covers it. Four pour-through models held the claim on the capture date. The category is not the claim.
Reading NSF/ANSI 372 as lead removal. It describes the lead content of the product. The word “lead” appears in both and they point in opposite directions.
Replacing a fridge cartridge without checking. The one already fitted may hold the claim, and the aftermarket equivalent may not.
Treating certification as a health guarantee. EPA sets the goal for lead at zero, stating there is no safe level of exposure. A claim is a tested reduction, not an elimination of risk.
Forgetting the replacement schedule. EPA states carbon filters have a specified shelf life and should be replaced on schedule. An exhausted cartridge is a bypass.

The objections worth answering
“Whole-house must be better, it treats everything.” It treats more water, upstream of the pipe that contributes the lead. The certified population reflects that: 58 point-of-entry models hold a chlorine claim and none holds a lead claim.
“Only four pitchers? That cannot be right.” It is NSF’s listing on one date for one claim, counting distinct model designations. Other certifiers publish separately and this page does not cover them.
“My filter says it reduces lead by 99 percent.” That names a figure and no standard. The listing names the claim, per model, and is the document such marketing is summarising.
“These figures will move.” They will. NSF dates its listings and asks readers to confirm status at source, which is why the capture date sits beside every figure here.
