The claim has a boundary, and it is a volume

Every roster page on this site ends with a version of the same sentence: a certified claim describes a cartridge inside its rated life.

This is what that means.

NSF’s listing records, for each certified filter model, a replacement element, a service cycle in gallons and a flow rate in gallons per minute. The service cycle is the volume across which the claim was validated.

EPA states the consequence directly:

Activated carbon filters are designed to filter a certain amount of water; after that, the filters become clogged and ineffective.

So past the rated volume you do not have a weaker certified filter. You have a cartridge the certification no longer describes.

And nothing tells you. Lead cannot be seen, tasted or smelled; nor can most of what these claims cover. The failure is silent by construction.

Price the cartridge before the system

EPA puts this in the buying advice rather than the maintenance advice, which is the right place for it:

All units require some maintenance, and it is important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for replacements… Check the schedule and cost for replacement filters.

The arithmetic is simple and almost never shown on a box:

cartridge price ÷ rated service cycle = cost per gallon

Multiply by what you actually draw through it. A cheap system with a short service cycle and an expensive cartridge is not a cheap system, and the listing gives you the denominator.

The substitution nobody checks

This is the part with real money in it.

NSF lists replacement elements as components in their own right — under NSF/ANSI 42 all replacement elements are components, and under NSF/ANSI 58 all replacement modules are components. They appear in the listing as separate rows with their own certifications.

Which means a certified system fitted with an unlisted aftermarket cartridge is a system whose certification no longer describes the part doing the filtering. The housing is certified. The thing inside it is not.

That is not an argument that aftermarket cartridges do not work. It is that there is nothing to check, and the whole point of buying certified was that there was.

Three operating rules EPA gives

Do not run hot water through the filter. EPA’s lead guidance says so plainly, alongside using only cold water for drinking, cooking and making baby formula.

Replace on schedule, because an expired cartridge is less effective. EPA: using a cartridge after it has expired “can make it less effective at removing lead.”

Do not substitute boiling. EPA states boiling water does not remove lead. It addresses microbes, not metals, and concentrates what it leaves behind.

The filters with no rating at all

Some listings carry no gallons figure, and that is deliberate.

NSF states that “claims of capacity or rated service cycle are not applicable for mechanical filtration”, so a sediment filter is listed with a flow rate and a blank where the capacity would be.

The blank is a property of the certification, not evidence of long life. A sediment cartridge still clogs; its replacement interval simply comes from the manufacturer and from watching your pressure rather than from a certified volume.

Reverse osmosis is recorded differently

NSF lists reverse osmosis systems with a replacement module and a daily production rate in gallons per day rather than a service cycle in gallons.

Membranes and pre-filters have separate lives, and the running cost includes water as well as cartridges: EPA notes reverse osmosis units use approximately three times as much water as they treat.

The decision framework

1. Find the rated service cycle before buying

It is in NSF’s listing beside the model, and it is the denominator for every cost calculation you will do afterwards.

If the figure is blank, check whether the product is a mechanical filter, where NSF does not apply capacity claims.

2. Cost the consumable, not the unit

Cartridge price divided by rated gallons, times your household’s draw. Compare that across models rather than comparing purchase prices.

3. Decide your replacement trigger in advance

Volume or interval, whichever is stated, and whichever comes first. Nothing in the water will tell you, and a calendar reminder is more reliable than an indicator you have not verified.

4. Buy the listed element

Look the replacement element up as its own listing entry. If the aftermarket part is not listed, you are choosing to hold an unverified component inside a verified housing.

Choose a longer service cycle if

  • You draw a lot of water through the unit, where cost per gallon dominates.
  • You would rather not rely on remembering a short interval.

Choose the listed replacement element if

  • You bought certified in order to be able to verify. An unlisted cartridge removes the thing you paid for.

Choose to recheck the listing if

  • You have owned the system a while. Claims are per model and listings change, and the capture date on any figure matters.

Mistakes that cost the most money

Buying on system price alone. EPA tells you to check the schedule and cost for replacements, and the consumable usually outweighs the unit over a few years.

Treating the rated volume as a suggestion. It is the volume the claim was validated across.

Waiting for a sign. The contaminants these claims cover cannot be seen, tasted or smelled.

Fitting an unlisted aftermarket cartridge to a certified system. The certification stops describing the part that filters.

Running hot water through it. EPA says not to.

Reading a blank capacity as long life. NSF does not apply capacity claims to mechanical filtration; the cartridge still clogs.

Three situations, and what changes

A fridge filter that has been in for two years. The most common case on this site: refrigerator filters hold 282 of the 615 models certified for lead. Look up the model’s rated service cycle, work out roughly what you have drawn, and treat the answer as binary rather than approximate.

A cheap under-sink system with an expensive proprietary cartridge. Run the cost per gallon before buying. The listing gives the rated volume and the supplier gives the price; the ratio is the real cost of the system.

An aftermarket cartridge at a third of the price. Look it up in NSF’s listing as a component. If it is there, the saving is real. If it is not, you are paying less for something you can no longer verify.

The objections worth answering

“My filter still tastes fine.” Taste tracks chlorine, which carbon reduces readily and early. It tells you nothing about lead, cysts or byproducts, and it outlasts nothing.

“An old filter is still better than none.” EPA’s word is ineffective, and this page will not go further than that — nothing sourced here says a spent cartridge releases what it captured, and plenty of writing asserts it without evidence.

“The indicator light says it is fine.” Indicators are a manufacturer feature, not a certified one. The rated volume is the figure that was tested.

“Aftermarket cartridges are the same thing.” Some are listed and some are not, and that is checkable in a few minutes. The question is not whether they work but whether you can tell.

Those two numbers give you the running cost and the replacement trigger. Neither is on the box and both are in the listing.
