Ask whether the claim exists before asking whether your filter has it
The usual version of this question is “does my filter remove fluoride?” The better first question is whether a fluoride claim exists under the standard your filter is certified to.
Often it does not, and that settles it before you look up a single model.
NSF’s own listing search is the record. It lets you select a reduction claim and returns every certified product holding it, which means the list of selectable claims is the list of things a product can be certified for.

The four claims that exist under one standard only
Selectable under NSF/ANSI 58 alone — the reverse osmosis standard — and under neither NSF/ANSI 42 nor 53:
- Fluoride reduction
- Nitrate/nitrite reduction
- TDS reduction
- Chromium (hexavalent) reduction
That is a hard constraint, not a preference. A pitcher, a fridge filter or a carbon block certified to 42 or 53 is not carrying a fluoride claim, because no such claim exists for it to carry.

What NSF/ANSI 42 covers, in full

Every one is aesthetic. A product certified only to NSF/ANSI 42 has no health-based reduction claim, because the standard offers none.
That is worth holding next to a separate fact about NSF listings: some entries are marked “conforms to the material requirements only”, which is a listing under a standard with no reduction claim at all.
The decision framework
1. Does a claim for your contaminant exist anywhere?
If it does not exist under any standard, no product is certified for it and the search is over. Check the selectable claim list first.
If it exists only under NSF/ANSI 58, your answer is a reverse osmosis system and the question of which pitcher to buy was never the right one.
2. Does it exist under the standard your filter holds?
If your filter is certified to 42 only, it holds one or more of seven aesthetic claims. Health contaminants are under 53, 58 and 401.
If it is certified to 53, roughly seventy claims exist, and yours may or may not be among the ones that model lists.
3. Which disinfectant does your utility use?
This is the criterion that quietly decides how hard shopping will be, and the numbers are lopsided.

If your report names chlorine, nearly everything on the shelf is a candidate.
If it names chloramine, the field narrows by a factor of about twenty-six, and the two are separate claims rather than degrees of the same one. EPA notes chloramines are less reactive with organic material than chlorine, which is part of why systems choose them — but it also means a filter proven against one has not been proven against the other.
4. Is the claim the same contaminant you mean?
Three places where the names diverge from ordinary usage:
PFAS is three claims. NSF/ANSI 53 lists PFOA reduction, PFOS reduction and total PFAS reduction separately. EPA has separately stated that current certification standards do not yet indicate a filter will reduce PFAS to its own limits.

Chromium is not hexavalent chromium. NSF/ANSI 53 offers chromium reduction and trivalent chromium reduction. The hexavalent claim exists under 58 only.
Arsenic comes with a ceiling. Pentavalent arsenic to 50 ppb is selectable under both 53 and 58; to 300 ppb under 58 only. Both are pentavalent, so trivalent arsenic is a separate problem.

How scarce is the claim you need?
A dated snapshot of NSF’s own match counts, read one claim at a time on 2026-09-10. It is a useful proxy for how much looking a claim will take.

Two readings worth taking from it.
Total PFAS stands at 49 against 5,565 for chlorine. The claim most people now want is among the scarcest in the database.
NSF/ANSI 177 has ten certified products and one claim. That standard governs shower filters, and its single claim is free available chlorine — no chloramine claim, no byproduct claim.

NSF counts listed model rows, and replacement components appear as separate products, so these are not counts of distinct consumer models. They are a measure of how populated a claim is.

Choose reverse osmosis if
- The claim you need is one of the four that exist under NSF/ANSI 58 alone: fluoride, nitrate/nitrite, TDS or hexavalent chromium.
- You accept it treats one tap. Under NSF/ANSI 58, TDS reduction is the only required claim, so confirm the rest are listed on that model.
Choose a point-of-use carbon filter if
- Your claim lives under 42, 53 or 401 and the model lists it.
- Your concern is taste, odour, lead, cysts or a named organic compound.
Choose to keep looking if
- Your model is certified to 42 only and you want a health claim. The standard offers none, so no amount of comparing within it will help.
Mistakes that cost the most money
Buying a carbon filter for fluoride. The claim does not exist under 42 or 53. This is the most common mismatch on the list and it is decided before any product comparison begins.
Treating chlorine and chloramine as one claim. They are separate claims under the same standard, and the certified populations differ by roughly twenty-six to one.
Reading “NSF certified” as covering your contaminant. Claims vary by product. A standard number is a category, not a promise.
Assuming a PFAS claim covers all PFAS. PFOA, PFOS and total PFAS are three claims, and EPA has said certification does not yet demonstrate reduction to its limits.
Buying a shower filter for byproducts. NSF/ANSI 177 offers one claim and it is free available chlorine.
Forgetting replacement. EPA states carbon filters have a specified shelf life and should be replaced on schedule. A certified claim describes a cartridge inside its rated life.
Three situations, and what changes
Chloramine system, buying a pitcher. Filter the listing by chloramine reduction rather than browsing. The claim exists, it is simply held by a small fraction of the catalogue, and the label often says “chlorine” while the report says chloramine.
You want fluoride out. Stop comparing carbon filters. The decision is whether reverse osmosis is worth the water use and the single-tap limitation, and the certified population for that claim stood at 145 products.
You already own a certified filter and a new concern appeared. Look the same model up again and read its full claim list. Models often hold claims their marketing never mentioned, and the listing is where they are recorded.
The objections worth answering
“My filter says it removes 99 percent of contaminants.” That phrasing names no contaminant and no standard. The listing names both, per model, and is the document the marketing is summarising.
“If the claim does not exist, the technology must not work.” Not quite. The absence of a claim means no product could be certified for it under that standard, which is a statement about the certification scheme. It is still the only verifiable basis a buyer has.
“These counts will be out of date.” They will. NSF dates its listings and asks readers to confirm status at source, which is why the capture date is printed beside every figure here and the search takes under a minute to re-run.
Who this is for
Anyone who has a named contaminant and a filter to buy, and who wants to know whether the claim they need exists before comparing products on price.
It is not a ranking and does not name models. It narrows the field to the listings worth reading.
