The format spread is the finding

Most claims on this site collapse into one product category. Fluoride and hexavalent chromium exist only on under-sink reverse osmosis. Chloramine holds no pitcher at all.

Seventy-one pitchers and gravity systems hold this claim. So a household that cannot fit an under-sink unit is not locked out of it, which is the opposite of the fluoride situation.

Microplastics does not appear anywhere in EPA’s National Primary Drinking Water Regulations. The full table was fetched and searched on 2026-09-10: the term occurs zero times, while entries such as total chromium and trihalomethanes are present, which confirms the table itself came back.

That has a specific consequence and it cuts both ways. Your utility has no figure to report, so your annual report will not mention microplastics — and the absence is not evidence of anything, in either direction.

It also means the certified claim is the only benchmark a household has. On most contaminants this site can set a claim against a regulatory limit. Here there is no limit to set it against.

A discrepancy in NSF’s own materials

Worth stating plainly rather than smoothing over.

NSF’s listing search offers sixteen selectable claims under NSF/ANSI 401, microplastics among them. NSF’s narrative page for the standard describes up to 15 individual contaminants.

Both are NSF. The standard’s full title is “Drinking Water Treatment Units - Emerging Compounds/Incidental Contaminants”, and microplastics sits a little oddly against that description — but which of the two figures NSF intends as current is not something this page can establish, and it does not guess.

The listing is the operative document for a buyer either way, because it records what each model actually holds.

How to read an NSF listing, footnotes included

The decision framework

1. Decide whether this is a reason to buy on its own

There is no regulatory limit, no reported figure, and no way to test your own water for it at household cost.

If microplastics is your only concern, you are buying against a claim with no benchmark. That is a legitimate choice, and it is worth making knowingly.

If you were buying a filter anyway, this claim is cheap to add, because so many models already hold it.

2. Pick the format that suits your home

This is the criterion that usually gets decided for you and here does not. Pitchers, faucet mounts, fridge filters, counter-top and under-sink systems all have certified options.

3. Check the claim on the model, not the category

806 models hold it, which means far more do not. Claims vary by product, and some NSF entries carry the footnote “conforms to the material requirements only” — a listing under a standard with no reduction claim at all.

4. Do not substitute a micron rating for the claim

A micron rating is certified as particulate reduction under NSF/ANSI 42 or 53. Microplastics reduction is a separate claim under NSF/ANSI 401. A filter may hold one, both or neither, and the listing is where that is recorded.

  • Everpure’s 221 are a large share of the total, and much of that company’s listing sits in commercial modular, so the household-relevant population is smaller than 806.
  • Kaz USA appears here with 87 models and held all 29 lead-certified faucet mounts in the separate lead roster, so the faucet-mount route to this claim is concentrated.
  • Doulton and Paragon are point-of-use specialists, which is consistent with the format spread rather than an exception to it.
  • Nothing in the listing distinguishes these models on performance, because NSF records claim membership rather than a reduction percentage.

Treating the absence of an EPA limit as reassurance, or as alarm. There is no standard, so there is nothing to be compliant or non-compliant with.

Paying a premium for the claim alone. It is widely held, including on inexpensive formats, so it rarely needs to drive the purchase.

Forgetting cartridge replacement. EPA states carbon filters have a specified shelf life and should be replaced on schedule. A claim describes a cartridge inside its rated life.

The objections worth answering

“There is no standard, so the claim is meaningless.” The claim is a tested protocol under NSF/ANSI 401, which is a real thing to hold. What is missing is a regulatory limit to compare your water against — a different gap, and the page says so rather than conflating them.

“806 models sounds like everything is certified.” It is a small fraction of NSF’s listed population. The chlorine claim alone is held by 3,479 distinct models.

“My filter says it removes 99.9 percent of microplastics.” That names a figure and no standard. NSF’s listing names the claim per model and records no percentage, so the marketing number is not something the listing supports.

“These figures will move.” They will. NSF dates its listings and asks readers to confirm status at source, which is why the capture date sits beside every figure here.
