Nobody can browse this, so nobody had counted it
NSF’s listing lets you search by reduction claim. It offers no way to browse by product category, so there is no page anywhere that says what the whole-house category is certified for.
Assembling it means searching claims one at a time and filtering each result to point-of-entry products. Thirteen searches on 2026-09-10 produced this.
The certified whole-house population
Across four claim searches that returned point-of-entry products: 62 distinct model designations from 14 companies.

Three of those are aesthetic claims under NSF/ANSI 42 — the standard whose entire seven-claim list is aesthetic. The other two are the exception, held by the same four models under one company.
The eight searches that returned nothing
Each of these was searched, and none returned a single point-of-entry product:

That is 3,709 rows across eight claims, and not one whole-house product among them. The PFOA and PFOS searches, 60 rows each, return none either.
That is the same answer EPA’s framing gives, reached from a different direction. EPA says point-of-entry devices earn their place for contaminants that turn into gases and may be inhaled while showering, and for scaling, staining and odour. The certified population matches that description almost exactly.

The one exception, and what it covers
Four point-of-entry models hold a VOC reduction claim, all listed under Aquion, Inc. The same four also hold a trihalomethanes reduction claim — searched separately, and it returned no other whole-house product.
VOC reduction is worth understanding because it is a bundle rather than a single contaminant. NSF states a VOC claim means the system reduces the concentration of every contaminant in a defined list — benzene, carbon tetrachloride, toluene, several pesticides and more — and that the category “also includes total trihalomethanes, which are a by-product of chlorination.”
So the one health claim available whole-house happens to cover the byproduct group that EPA names as an inhalation risk in the shower. That is a coherent fit rather than a coincidence.

The decision framework
1. Name the job before the product
If the job is protecting plumbing and appliances, or removing chlorine from every tap, or stopping sediment, the certified population covers it.
If the job is a contaminant with a health limit, the certifications are not there. Treat the tap you drink from instead.
2. Check which claim you are being sold
A point-of-entry unit certified to NSF/ANSI 42 holds one or more of seven aesthetic claims. That standard offers no health claim at all, so certification to it cannot mean what a salesperson may imply.

Some listings also carry the footnote “conforms to the material requirements only”, which places a product under a standard with no reduction claim whatsoever.
3. Ask for the listing, not the brochure
If a whole-house product is offered for lead, PFAS, chloramine or fluoride, the question is which accredited body certified it and for which claim. Twelve searches here found no such listing with NSF.

4. Keep softeners out of the comparison
Softeners are certified under NSF/ANSI 44 for hardness reduction and efficiency. That is a different standard doing a different job, and a softener is not a filter.

- Aquion holds 20 of 62, and all four VOC-certified models. If the VOC bundle is what you want whole-house, that is where the certified listings are.
- The population is small. Sixty-two models across the whole category, where a single point-of-use claim such as cyst reduction has 1,746 rows behind it.
- Nine of the twelve nominal particulate claims are Class III. Particulate classes describe particle size bands, so a sediment claim is not one thing either.

Choose a whole-house filter if
- The job is chlorine, taste, odour or sediment at every fixture.
- You want the VOC bundle and are comfortable that four models hold it.
- You are protecting plumbing, appliances and laundry rather than treating a health-limited contaminant.
Choose point-of-use as well if
- Anything on your report carries a health limit. The certifications for those contaminants are on point-of-use products, without exception across the claims searched here.
Choose neither if
- Your report is clean and the taste does not bother you. Both purchases solve a problem you do not have.
Mistakes that cost the most money
Buying whole-house for lead. No point-of-entry product held a lead claim in either the NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 search, and lead is picked up downstream of where such a unit sits.
Reading NSF/ANSI 42 certification as health protection. That standard’s whole claim list is aesthetic. Certification to it is real and means something narrower than it sounds.
Assuming whole-house replaces a drinking filter. Across thirteen searched claims, the health certifications are all on point-of-use products.
Treating a softener as a filter. Different standard, different job, and it will not appear in any of these claim searches.
Paying for coverage of every tap you never drink from. Whole-house treats the garden hose and the toilet cistern at the same cost per gallon as the kitchen tap.
Skipping the cartridge schedule. EPA states carbon filters have a specified shelf life and should be replaced on schedule. Whole-house cartridges cost more and are easier to forget.
Three situations, and what changes
Chlorine smell in every room, and a shower you dislike. The clearest case for whole-house, and the certified population is built for it — 59 models hold a chlorine claim and 55 hold taste and odour.
A lead notice from your utility. Whole-house is the wrong purchase, and the listing agrees: no point-of-entry product holds a lead claim. Fit a certified point-of-use filter at the drinking tap instead.

A contractor quoting a whole-house system for “contaminant removal”. Ask which contaminants and which claims. If the answer is lead, PFAS, cysts or fluoride, the certifications for those are not in this category.
The objections worth answering
“Only 62 models? The category is much bigger than that.” The certified population is what this counts, across thirteen searched claims. Many whole-house products are sold without a reduction certification at all, which is the point rather than a gap in the data.
“My whole-house system is NSF certified.” Very likely, and for chlorine, taste and odour or particulate. Look up the model and read the claim column.
“You are telling me not to buy one.” No — three of the four jobs a whole-house filter is certified for are real and worth paying for. The argument is against buying one for a job it holds no certification to do.
“These figures will move.” They will. NSF dates its listings and asks readers to confirm status at source, which is why the capture date and the searched claims are both printed here.
Who this is for
Anyone quoted for a whole-house system, and anyone deciding between treating the main and treating the tap.
It is a census of what is certified, not a ranking, and it names no recommended product.

Which job am I buying this for, and does any point-of-entry product hold a claim for it?
For chlorine, taste, odour and sediment the answer is yes. For everything with a health limit, across the claims searched here, it was no.
