Free available chlorine is not chloramine.
NSF lists chloramine reduction as a separate claim, under a different standard — NSF/ANSI 42 — held by 137 distinct models on 2026-09-10. No chloramine claim is selectable under NSF/ANSI 177 at all.
So on a chloraminated supply, a certified shower filter is certified for a disinfectant your utility is not using. EPA notes systems choose chloramine in part because it is less reactive with organic material than chlorine and so produces substantially lower concentrations of disinfection byproducts.

If it is byproducts, hardness or anything health-limited, this category holds no claim for it and a shower filter is the wrong purchase regardless of price.
3. Decide whether a certified product matters to you

Choose a certified shower filter if
- Your supply is chlorinated and the chlorine smell in the shower is the thing you want changed.
- You want a tested claim behind the purchase, and are content that the claim is aesthetic and singular.
Choose whole-house instead if

Choose neither if

Mistakes that cost the most money
Buying a shower filter for chloramine. The claim does not exist under the shower standard, and chloramine reduction is a separate claim under a different one.
Buying one for disinfection byproducts. EPA does name the shower as an inhalation route for byproducts, which is what makes this pitch persuasive. No certified shower product holds a byproduct claim.
Reading NSF/ANSI 177 certification as broad. The standard’s title ends in “Aesthetic Effects” and it offers one claim.
Expecting a hardness effect. Hardness reduction is certified under NSF/ANSI 44 and belongs to softeners.
Assuming the category is well certified because the shelf is full. Eight distinct certified models exist in this listing.
Ignoring cartridge replacement. EPA states carbon filters have a specified shelf life and should be replaced on schedule. A shower cartridge in a hot, wet fitting is easy to forget.

The objections worth answering
“Eight models? There are hundreds on sale.” There are, and most are uncertified. This counts what is certified in NSF’s listing, which is the only part anyone can verify.
“My filter claims to remove chloramine.” Then ask which accredited body certified that claim. No such claim exists under the shower standard, so it would have to sit elsewhere.
“Aesthetic does not mean useless.” Agreed, and the page does not say it does. A chlorine smell in a hot shower is a real thing to want gone, and the claim addresses it honestly. The problem is only when aesthetic certification is sold as health protection.
“These figures will move.” They will. NSF dates its listings and asks readers to confirm status at source, which is why the capture date sits beside every figure here.
