The badge is a summary. The listing is the document.

A certification mark on a box tells you a standard number. It does not tell you which claims that model holds under the standard, and under NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 the claims vary by product.

NSF publishes the actual record: a searchable listing of drinking water treatment units, queryable by trade name or company name.

Look up the exact model number. Everything below is how to read what comes back.

What a listing row contains

Each row gives the brand, trade name and model, the replacement element, the rated service cycle in gallons, the flow rate, and a claim column.

The claim column is the reason to be there. It names the individual reductions that model was certified for — chlorine, lead, cyst, fluoride, nitrate — one line each.

If your contaminant is not in that column for that model, the model is not certified to reduce it, regardless of what the standard covers in general.

The footnotes that withdraw the claim

This is the part nobody quotes, and it changes what a listing means.

NSF marks some entries:

[1] Conforms to the material requirements only.

And others:

[2] Conforms to the material and structural integrity requirements only.

A product carrying either footnote appears in the database under a standard while no contaminant reduction performance has been certified. The first means NSF evaluated what it is made of. The second adds that the housing withstands pressure.

Neither is a filtration finding. Both are legitimate certifications of real things — material safety is worth having — and neither answers the question you came to ask.

So read the claim column, then read the footnote attached to the row. A blank claim column with a material-requirements footnote is a complete answer, and the answer is no.

Three markings that sound like performance and are not

NSF/ANSI/CAN 372. NSF’s marking states the product is certified to 372 and “conforms with the lead content requirements for ‘lead free’ plumbing as defined by California, Vermont, Maryland, and Louisiana state laws and the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act.”

That is the lead inside the product, not lead taken out of your water. Lead reduction is a separate claim.

Lead, and what your utility owes you

NSF/ANSI/CAN 61. The point-of-entry marking states the product “conforms to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 health effects requirements.” That is a materials standard for things in contact with drinking water — what the product may contribute. It certifies no treatment performance.

A component listing. NSF notes under NSF/ANSI 42 that all replacement elements are components, and under NSF/ANSI 58 that all replacement modules are components, listing filter cartridges and filter housings in their own categories.

A certified cartridge is not a certified system. Check which kind of row you are reading.

The two softener markings, and what each verifies

They are frequently quoted as one thing. They are not.

Why some rows have no capacity figure

NSF states that “claims of capacity or rated service cycle are not applicable for mechanical filtration.”

So a sediment filter listing shows a flow rate and no gallons. That blank is a property of the certification, not evidence the cartridge runs forever. The replacement interval still comes from the manufacturer.

Choose what to trust, in this order

  • Choose the live NSF listing over everything else. NSF dates its listings to a specific day and time and asks readers to confirm the status of any listing at source.
  • Choose the claim column over the standard number. Under NSF/ANSI 58, TDS reduction is the only required claim, so a certified system may hold nothing else you care about.
  • Choose the model number over the product family. Listings are per model, and families contain models with different claims.
  • Do not choose a badge image on a retailer’s page. NSF states it is concerned about fraudulent downloading and manipulation of website text.

Mistakes that cost the most money

Reading the standard number as the claim. NSF/ANSI 401 offers up to 15 contaminant claims, so certification to 401 does not mean all 15.

Treating a material-requirements listing as certification of performance. The footnote says what was evaluated. It is the most consequential six words in the database.

Buying the family, not the model. Claims are listed per model number, and the difference between two models in one range is exactly the kind of thing the database exists to record.

Reading NSF/ANSI 372 as lead removal. It describes the lead content of the product. The word “lead” appears in both, and they point in opposite directions.

Checking a cartridge and assuming the system. Component and system listings sit in separate categories for a reason.

Assuming a certification covers a new contaminant. EPA stated in April 2024 that current certification standards for PFAS filters do not yet indicate a filter will remove PFAS down to its limits.

Three situations, and what changes

The box says “tested to NSF standards”. Tested and certified are different statements, and only one of them produces a listing. Search the database by company name as well as trade name, then ask the seller which accredited body certified the model and for which claims.

You find the model, and the claim you need is absent. That settles it for that model. Check whether another model in the range carries the claim, because the listing is per model.

You find the model with a material-requirements footnote. The product is genuinely listed, and genuinely makes no reduction claim. Both things are true at once, and marketing tends to report only the first.

The objections worth answering

“It is on the manufacturer’s site, so it must be current.” NSF dates its listings and asks readers to confirm status at the live page. Certifications can lapse, and a copied badge does not.

“Surely nobody lists a filter that filters nothing.” Material safety certification is a real and useful thing to hold — it means the housing is not adding contaminants. The problem is not the listing, it is quoting the standard number without the footnote.

“This is a lot of work for a water filter.” It is one search and one column. The alternative is paying for a claim that was never made.
