42, 53 and 401 all apply to both point-of-use and point-of-entry systems.

The rule that matters more than the numbers

Under NSF/ANSI 42 and 53, certification claims vary by product.

That single phrase, which NSF prints in its own testing description, undoes the way most filtration is sold. A system “certified to NSF/ANSI 53” has not been tested against all fifty-plus contaminants in that standard. It has been tested against the specific claims listed for that model — which might be one.

So “NSF/ANSI 53 certified” on a box tells you the product went through health-effects testing. It tells you nothing about whether it reduces lead, or cysts, or the specific thing you are worried about.

The question to ask is never “is it certified?” It is:

Certified to which standard, for which specific claim?

For NSF/ANSI 401, NSF describes it as offering “up to 15” claims rather than using the “varies by product” phrasing — the practical implication is the same, but the source language is weaker, and we have logged it as such.

Reading each one honestly

NSF/ANSI 42 — aesthetic effects

“Establishes minimum requirements for systems designed to reduce non-health-related contaminants.”

Note what that excludes. A system certified only to 42 has not been tested for any health-related contaminant at all. It may still be an excellent filter for chlorine taste. It makes no health claim, and neither should anyone selling it.

Iron and manganese appear under 42 rather than 53 because their effects — staining, metallic taste — are aesthetic. That matches EPA’s treatment of them as Secondary Maximum Contaminant Levels which EPA does not enforce.

NSF/ANSI 53 — health effects

“Establishes minimum requirements for systems designed to reduce specific health-related contaminants.” Over 50 claims available; lead, Cryptosporidium, VOCs and chromium are among the most common.

The word doing the work is specific. See the rule above.

NSF/ANSI 44 — softeners

Scoped to “cation exchange resin regenerated with sodium or potassium chloride.” Its scope covers hardness reduction, material safety, structural integrity, pressure drop, softening capacity and rinse effectiveness, brine system accuracy, and accuracy of information provided to end users.

That last item makes 44 unusual: it puts the truthfulness of what a manufacturer tells you inside the certified scope, not just the hardware.

NSF/ANSI 401 — emerging compounds

Addresses a device’s ability to remove “up to 15 individual contaminants identified in published studies as occurring in drinking water,” present at trace levels.

It is not a general-purpose health certification and does not substitute for 53.

What is missing from this page

NSF/ANSI 58, the reverse osmosis standard, is not covered here. We have not been able to retrieve its scope from a source we can quote — nsf.org returns an error to automated requests and its PDF versions are scanned images.

We are not going to summarise a certification standard from memory. When we can source it, it will appear here.

How to check a specific product

NSF publishes a searchable listing of certified drinking water treatment units. Look the model up rather than trusting the box: the listing shows the standard and the individual claims that model actually holds.

That is the difference between a badge and a specification.
